Our Why

Have you heard our WHY?

Easton Foundations is known for archery; known for its long history with the sport, for archery centers, grants, and innovation. It is so much fun for archers to visit our centers in Newberry, Chula Vista, and Salt Lake City. The question often asked is, “Can we have a center built in our area?”

What is the right answer to that question? Where do you even begin? How do you know if an area needs support for an archery range from a data-driven analysis? Our WHY began with another question.

In the fall of 2020, Carl Greene began asking, “Where are the archery ranges?”

With support of the Foundation, work began on this unnamed research project in January 2021. As state-by-state Google and social media searches progressed, Carl decided on the name Archery Passport. When you think about a passport it gives you access to a place. Archery Passport would give users access to information about archery, ranges first, then who knows! In March 2021, aggregate database information was presented on a on a website internally to demonstrate proof of concept. A 50-state range search took quite some time. Can you envision a map of the US with over 2,000 pins on it each representing a range, an opportunity for someone to encounter and participate in archery? It was so motivating to see the map filled. Hundreds of you had the opportunity to see this image at the 2023 Vegas Shoot!

Archerypassport.com launched officially in September 2022 with announcements made on social media. It was so exciting to be able to finally share that over 2,000 archery ranges had been located nationwide! In addition to ranges, the website also helped users find archery organizations and clubs by state, connected archers with National Governing Bodies, offered archer performance logs, archery club calendars & bulletin boards, and archery events.

In May 2023, an App development team joined the project. Have you ever tried to give a technical description and analysis of archery ranges, shooting, scoring, score cards, targets, clubs, and events to a group of non-archers? It took time and terrific teamwork! The developers also shared with us data presentation options and the amazing visual contrast of offering an App in dark mode (the black and green presentation you currently see), as well as light mode for those who prefer that color palette. Launched in January 2024, the Archery Passport App has been a three-year project born from one simple question, “Where are the archery ranges?”

The Archery Passport Team must give thanks to coaches, clubs, and archers who have shared innovative ideas, given constructive feedback, and continued to support efforts to raise awareness of archery opportunities in local communities. Thank you for Discovering the World of Archery with us!
